Daring to twitter

For some time, I've been holding off experimenting with Twitter.

First, because the name of the service still rankles with me.

Second, because I'm fearful that it will turn out to be a distraction.

On the other hand, I remember having similar apprehensions before starting to blog, and before registering on Facebook. These are two experiments that have turned out very positive for me. So I hope to have a similar positive experience with Twitter:
  • So I can understand better why so many people speak well of it
  • So that I can improve my communication network.

I tried to register the name "dw2-0" for myself on Twitter, but it seemed not to like the hyphen. I've ended up with the simpler Twitter name "dw2".

Subscribed to you, I'm s_constantine.

You should quickly install TweetDeck on your desktop and as for mobile use dabr.co.uk

welcome to the twitterati club. It's noisy there, but sometimes it can be good.

If you don't want Twitter to become a distraction, I would recommend AGAINST TweetDeck. You'll be addicted within minutes.

Hmm, I tried to install TweetDeck. I was anticipating my first real experience with AIR.

But the installation failed part-way through with:

"Sorry, an error has occurred. The application could not be installed because the AIR file is damaged. Try obtaining a new AIR file from the application author".

I guess I'll try again later!

David, welcome to Twitter. Like you I'm undecided. I tried and failed some time ago, then tried and enjoyed at a conference (twitter backchannel can be useful).

Full story in my blog pot Is this Twitter Sceptic starting to get it?

I'm still not sure about it - far too much noise. I notice that I now only log in when I'm at an event.

I'm trying out Twitter too (as c1rrus since my usual cirrus was taken *grumble* *grumble*) and am now "following" you. :-)

Btw, if you're using Facebook, you can use the Twitter FB application to sync your tweets and FB status. It works fine for me.

Happy tweeting!

Hi David, welcome to Twitter. I too joined fairly recently (@samstokes). I'm not yet entirely on board, but as an RSS addict I can see its appeal as an information source.

I second the recommendation of TweetDeck - its keyword search and tag cloud helped me "get" Twitter. I got the same "AIR file is damaged" error at one point - I think I got around it by reinstalling the AIR runtime.
